What does MacPaint want to write there on the disk?

Does this mean "not enough RAM" or "disk is read-only"?
MacPaint, after all, should run on a Mac 128K.

With the source code of MacPaint being available via the Computer History Museum, can we find out why MacPaint refuses to run from a read-only ("protected") disk?

And would we be able to patch that away?

When you say we.. where did you get up to in trying this out? :)
(I haven’t read the source, I don’t know what scratch file it needs to write. I’d guess they didn’t do it only for fun though and current assumption is that it serves a purpose FWIW.)

So no, I don't know the answer yet - looking at that source code, I might just as well look at Chinese.
