compreface-core on separate node

I wish to run the compreface-core container on a different node than the rest of the containers, while continuing to use docker compose. There already appears to be provisions in compreface-api for PYTHON_URL= however compreface-fe will not start due to:

nginx: [emerg] host not found in upstream "compreface-core:3000" in /etc/nginx/conf.d/nginx.conf:10

Is there an ENV setting to override compreface-fe -> compreface-core url?

Docker allows you to inject additional entries to the containers hosts file. I defined the compreface-core host in the compreface-ui container via docker-compose.yaml so that the compreface-ui container could find the core container on the other host.
