Despite checking my tab settings making sure nothing is influencing this, this behaviour continues.

I have tried the default and both reload tab in background methods.

Sadly yes, the "Auto-reload" feature no longer works in background in Chromium browsers.
It was never perfect, but now it's really bad, because Chromium requires at least 50% of the window to be in the user viewport.

Currently, only Firefox allows creating invisible tabs, where thumbnails can be created.
Alternative, but not free solution, is the "Create thumbnail in the cloud" feature in the PRO version, which I've added only in the last release.
But it's still a bit experimental and I haven't even wrote documentation for it.
