 disconnected due to malformed packet

When trying to push data to my mqtt broker (Mosquitto) is get the messsage

 disconnected due to malformed packet
```
I tried different versions of the broker but I'm unable to fix this. Not sure how to debug this any further.
I'm running this instance on my QNAP nas.
