Feature: Disable Git entirely

What feature or improvement do you think would benefit Files?

Is it possible to disable Git entirely?

When I enter a folder that has a Git repository AND that folder is also in on-demand sync mode, Files will attempt to download files.

This not only goes against my desire to have it only in on-demand sync mode, but it also makes Files slightly more unresponsive while it's downloading files.

Requirements

• Disable all Git functionality, especially
  • the auto-detection of Git repositories
  • and the downloading of Git repositories

Can you please open a bug report to track this?

Is it possible to disable Git entirely?

The git columns should be turned off by default (please let us know if this is not the case). Any performance related issues with Git would otherwise be related to the issue causing your cloud files to download.

In my case, I'd like to be able to disable it completely. If I enter a git repository in Files I get a prompt from my password manager that Files wants to use my SSH key. It's annoying with that prompt and I don't need any Git functionality in the file manager. So I need it to do no hidden Git commands in the background at all.

Aside from displaying the branch, no git specific code should be running unless you have the Git columns visible. If you find otherwise (as was reported regarding cloud locations), please open a separate report so we can resolve that.

With git columns, do you mean the fields in the status bar at the bottom, with the number of commits and branches?

I found how to enable the git columns for the details view after looking around a bit, and no, they were not enabled, I didn't even know that option existed until now. 😛

And I tested the Preview version from the Microsoft Store, it does not happen there. So something done there seems to have fixed it. 🙂

Thanks! I'll wait for @cardin to confirm before I close this issue, but it looks like this was fixed by downgrading LibGit2Sharp to 0.30.0.

The problem is hard to reproduce because it requires the folder to be a partial cloud-only state, with some files in .git present, and some not present.

If it's okay with you, I will defer to @heksesang observation that it seems to be fixed

@cardin That sounds great! If you experience the issue again, please let us know, and we'll try to identify the root cause. It's always better to resolve the underlying issue rather than adding a setting to bypass it 🙂.
