Investigate platform compatibility

There's some issues when running on Windows:

- Encoding needs to be set to "UTF-8"
- Variable classes seem to get messed up - especially in the case of BACI we end up with characters e.g. for *value*. In some other places *year* seems to get coerced to characters as well.
- `unzip`'s exdir cannot end in `/` on Windows machines
