flutterfire configure -> flutter run results in error

I was going through the installation guide.
I ran the flutterfire configure and I have a firebase_options.dart file.
When running flutter run I get the following error:

A problem occurred evaluating root project 'android'.

Could not get unknown property 'firebase_options' for repository container of type org.gradle.api.internal.artifacts.dsl.DefaultRepositoryHandler.

What am I doing wrong?
