bug: node is stuck & has no logs

not sure how this happens because we do have diagnostic logs to be printed every few seconds

One reproducible case seems to be by running the node all day, and occasionally either disconnect the internet / go to sleep mode; when the connection is back we can see the "listening on ..." logs but nothing else.
