Alright, here’s a write-up of what I discovered over the weekend:

If what we’re looking for is just what was described in the Github card, the only quick and easy solution I could find would be the existing Tag Banners component. All it does is add a banner to the page that displays the tag’s name and description.

It is quick and easy but has a few glaring problems:

1. You can’t customize the “title” of the banner: it will always be an adapted version of the tag name
2. You can’t customize the overall layout appearance of the banner: Font, colors, size, etc, are all pre-set by the theme itself
3. You can’t define custom settings for different tags: They all look the same

Now, some of these (like #3) can be worked around by adding custom CSS to our theme, since the Tag Banner component’s injected HTML will use the tag’s name in its class property, and we could style that. But that would have its own set of problems (it would require tags to be kept hyphenized, which looks weird). In any case, here’s an attempt at making it work: https://discourse.gabe.fm/tag/the-mev-letter.

It illustrates the point well: if all we want is to highlight some message in the tag page, we can get some 70% of the way there with the Tag Banner component, out of the box.

I still like that approach because it makes use of the tag’s discourse description, which is easy to update. So, given the current scope, this would be my suggest approach.

Anything more than that, and in order to fix the existing issues with the component, will require that we fork that component and tackle a few things ourselves:

1. Option to hide the tag name from the banner: That way we can set a title ourselves with a <h1>, for example
2. Fix issue where the setting to remove hyphens from the tag name also impacts the generated classes

These two items should be easy enough to fix in the forked version of the component, though I haven’t gone into the source code yet to be sure.

With that fork and our custom theme, we should be able to have some good level of control over the banner’s appearance for different tag pages, although it wouldn’t be possible to control the CSS and the layout from a single place, which is a shame. For that, maybe we could move the logic from the component to the theme, which I believe to be possible.

That’s as far as my research got me. And, before doing anything else, I think it would be great to have a better sense of what kind of changes we’d like to make to these tag pages. Is it just a banner? Is it different stylings entirely? What is the end goal, here?
