This document outlines a strategy to evolve the existing push notification system from a simple subscription-based model (for digests and breaking news) into a sophisticated, internally-controlled user engagement platform.

The core principle is to centralize all segmentation, campaign logic, and triggering within our own backend services and admin dashboard. The external push providers (Firebase, OneSignal) will be treated purely as commoditized delivery pipelines, abstracting away their specific features in favor of a unified, provider-agnostic internal system. This gives us full control, ownership of our data, and the flexibility to switch providers with minimal impact.

This unified approach creates a powerful, self-contained engagement loop, turning the notification system from a simple alert mechanism into a strategic tool for driving retention and monetization, all while maintaining full control over the logic and user experience.
