Build website with mystmd instead of Quarto

We'd like to be using tooling in the Jupyter ecosystem so we can contribute to strengthening those tools. It's only fair, as we will benefit tremendously from Jupyter communities to contribute to GeoJupyter.

To achieve this, we need:

• Blog / listing functionality for sharing meeting notes, community insights, and possibly decision records. Should support categories / tags to separate these types of posts. - Vews of content / document listings based on page metadata (e.g. for blogs, site navigation, etc) jupyter-book/mystmd#840
• RSS feed
• ??

I think listing functionality might be the only thing that's missing. I haven't done a full exploration yet!

I've made a first pass of a MyST build (click on the dark/light icon to get a light theme, else it will look like total garbage).

There's definitely a lot of issues still - I've posted a bunch of questions on the MyST discord, a few things on the tracker, and added comments to the git log as well.

But I think it basically works, and we could move forward and start improving MyST itself.

The main things I think should be fixed before we actually move over:

• There's weird alignment issues on the front page, and it looks ugly. No idea.
• The lack of :foo: emoji support is annoying, because they are used a lot in our sources. MyST has an emojis issue but it's about pdf/latex. I asked on Discord.
• Blog RSS feed, as noted above by @mfisher87.
• The rendering uses way too much vertical whitespace, so many pages look really odd. Maybe some CSS tweaks are enough.

I actually don't think the lack of full blog support should be a blocker: a full, customizable listing machinery is (I think) a lot of work, and my hackish python-based solution (in this notebook) isn't great, but it gets a first cut of the job done. I would move forward with this approach for now, and work with the MyST team to get a better long-term solution.

But I think we're reasonably close, and I'd love to see if we can make this happen in the near-ish future :)

@fperez on mobile to make some suggestions! There is a construct for buttons, using the button role. I'd suggest those instead of custom spans.

Regarding blank space, are you talking about the landing page? That particular quirk is a known properly of stacking title blocks, which needs some thought!

Can you clarify what you mean by stacking title blocks?

Something is creating a really large vertical padding around those buttons. Here's the culprit in HTML/CSS land:

The centered block has a large amount of padding, because it's intended for headings. The CTA block doesn't have any, so the padding looks out of place!

I think the solution is to use the MyST buttons, and add them to the same block (don't create a new centered block). The theme will take care of the positioning.
