Better IDE (VS Code) Support

No hints on hover, no jump to definition

Hey, maybe I'm doing something wrong but the IntelliSense / IDE support in VS Code for this package does not seem to be super great. E.g. if I hover over the HttpHandler I do not get any information. Command + Click which usually jumps to the definition doesn't work either.

I'm using the Ionide VS Code extension. In comparison another package like Npgsql.Fsharp has great support. I get hints for everything I hover over and can easily do a Command Click to jump to the source / definition.

I'm new to F# so I might just be doing something wrong though.

Hello @pumuckelo, I found your question interesting. I do not have deep knowledge on the subject yet, but I’ve looked into it a bit.

So far, from what I have seen, Giraffe’s SourceLink configuration appears to be correct.
The issue seems to be that, due to the way some functions are defined, the compiler is unable to fully record source location information for those functions in the PDB.

I have identified the same behavior in Microsoft.AspNetCore, which makes me wonder whether this could be intentional for some reason. @64J0, do you have any insight into this?

If needed, as a temporary workaround to make code exploration easier, you can fork Giraffe and reference it directly in your project:
<ProjectReference Include="../Giraffe/src/Giraffe/Giraffe.fsproj" />

I will continue looking into this and will follow up if I find anything new.

What information would you like to get?

From my understanding, you'd like to be redirected to the code that defines this type, or that implements it in the Giraffe library, is that it? As @AugustoRengel noticed, this seems to be related to the SourceLink configuration. We can try improving it somehow.

Just to confirm, are you having these problems in the Giraffe repository itself?
