About Me
I'm John Leider, a software engineer and entrepreneur, best known as the creator of Vuetify, a popular open-source component framework for the Vue.js JavaScript framework. My journey into technology began after serving over five years as an Infantryman in the United States Army, where I developed the discipline and problem-solving skills that would later serve me well in the world of web development.
Creating Vuetify
I started working on Vuetify in June 2016, initially as a prototyping tool to help me quickly mock up websites for side projects. Having experienced firsthand the challenges that developers face when trying to create beautiful, professional-looking applications without strong design skills, I wanted to build something that would democratize good design. My vision was to create a framework that would empower developers, particularly those who were less experienced with design, to build stunning web applications without needing to be design experts themselves.
Building a Thriving Ecosystem
What began as a personal tool has grown into one of the most widely used Vue.js libraries, with a comprehensive ecosystem of tools and resources. I've kept Vuetify MIT-licensed to ensure it remains free and accessible to all developers. The framework now provides hundreds of meticulously crafted components that follow Google's Material Design specifications, making it easier than ever for developers to create consistent, beautiful user interfaces.
Through Vuetify, LLC, the company I founded, I've been able to build a sustainable business around open-source software, generating $300,000 per year in revenue as of 2021. This success has allowed me to continue dedicating my time to the project while supporting a dedicated core team and vibrant community of contributors through various sponsorship models, including GitHub Sponsors and Open Collective.
Ongoing Commitment
I continue to serve as the CEO of Vuetify, actively contributing to the project's development and guiding its future direction. My commitment to the open-source community extends beyond just code – I regularly speak at conferences such as VueConf, where I share insights and connect with fellow developers who are passionate about building great software.
My journey from military service to open-source entrepreneurship has taught me the value of persistence, community, and the power of tools that empower others to achieve their goals.
