Hi,

inventory format is designed to be multi-platform and we want to keep the least possible amount of datas useful to only one OS. Each time we want to add new datas, this means we have to develop new support in glpi-agent and in GLPI. This means so we can add more and more code maintenance and this can involve too much issues. To limit this problem and to be able to answer more OS specific problems, Collect task has been developed since years and it still a good answer.

On the FAQ link I provided, the TPM question is taken as example. And actually, this solution seems sufficient for people who still used it.

About your question, glpi-agent is indeed a task runner: inventory is a task. It supports other useful tasks and collect one can be useful.
