If you follow the instructions, it gives you a command to paste which generates a postgres password. However, it is not the same as the one in your previous install, so you'd get the FATAL error in your issue. The only way to resolve this issue is to recover and use your original password

i deleted the password at point 3. I since cannot for the love of god reset the db password. this is peak typical docker. i tried purging then installing docker-ce again from apt, no success.

I don't see how it's peak docker behavior? You'd encounter the same issue if your postgres was bare-metal and you lost the password

Try:

# access your postgres container
docker exec -it <postgres_container> bash

# connect to your db
psql -U postgres

# reset password
ALTER ROLE youruser WITH PASSWORD 'newpassword';

This is expected behavior from PostgreSQL when an incorrect password is supplied.
