Authentik Endpoint Linux SSH generic Error

Having issues getting anything working for the authentik linux agent for ssh sorely stuck on

$ ak ssh hostname
Error: ssh: handshake failed: ssh: unable to authenticate, attempted methods [none], no supported methods remain

closely followed https://docs.goauthentik.io/endpoint-devices/authentik-agent/device-authentication/ssh-authentication/ and all components are installed and am authenticated trying to sign into a debian trixie system I see my authentik user is also present on the local system. Endpoint agent is healthy in authentik ui. At a complete loss and would appreciate any help.
