[Feedback Wanted] New PostgreSQL and MySQL Gemini CLI extensions

We're excited to get your feedback on the new open-source Gemini CLI extensions for PostgreSQL* and MySQL! These extensions are designed to make it easier to connect and interact with your databases directly from your terminal. 🚀

Setup Instructions

First, make sure you have the latest version of gemini-cli installed.

npm install -g @google/gemini-cli@latest

Setup for Postgres Extension

1. Install the Extension

gemini extensions install https://github.com/gemini-cli-extensions/postgres

2. Configure Environment Variables

export POSTGRES_HOST="your_postgres_host"
export POSTGRES_PORT="your_postgres_port"
export POSTGRES_DATABASE="your_database_name"
export POSTGRES_USER="your_username"
export POSTGRES_PASSWORD="your_password"

Setup for MySQL Extension

1. Install the Extension

gemini extensions install https://github.com/gemini-cli-extensions/mysql

2. Configure Environment Variables

export MYSQL_HOST="your_mysql_host"
export MYSQL_PORT="your_mysql_port"
export MYSQL_DATABASE="your_database_name"
export MYSQL_USER="your_username"
export MYSQL_PASSWORD="your_password"

3. Start Gemini CLI and validate everything is working!

gemini # start Gemini CLI after setting environment variables!

/extensions list # should show extension is installed!
/mcp list # should show MCP server is working!

Works great on my end (mac - postgres). Really handy feature, especially for those of us in data engineering and analytics.

Would love to see a couple more tools in the future, something like:

• query_analyze : runs EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) to get actual query runtime and I/O stats for performance tuning.
• table_statistics : surfaces table-level stats (row count, dead tuples, scans, last vacuum/analyze) from pg_stat_user_tables.
