Unable to setup Gemini Code Assist Standard - CLI keeps switching to gemini-2.5-flash no matter what?

I'm following the docs at https://goo.gle/set-up-gemini-code-assist

1. Purchased a Gemini Code Assist subscription. "Gemini Code Assist is enabled"
2. Ensured that Gemini for Google Cloud API is enabled
3. Assigned license to my email
4. Setup the GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT environment variable
5. Using /auth command to sign in with my Google account that has the code assist and license
6. Still getting the same old Automatically switching from gemini-2.5-pro to gemini-2.5-flash for faster responses for the remainder of this session. message.

This user has the same problem: #3141

Is this the intended behavior, or am I doing something wrong?

Looks like Google released a half baked product. Getting users to pay when the CLI doesn't even recognise the payment is diabolical.

I've rarely been called diabolical, but I definately feel your frustration. I'll personally look into this today. Could you email me at keithballinger (anyone else who is experiencing same, also feel free) - keithballinger at google. And I'll investigate. Sorry this is happening to you.

Still, it's been 3 days since your response, and the state is EXACTLY the same - nothing has changed at all. The CLI is still being touted as a free service. It still asks for payment from the 1st request. The payment STILL doesn't unlock the pro model.

So yes, it is diabolical.
