How to use YouTube’s liveChatMessages.streamList in Node.js instead of polling?

I’m working on a Next.js / Node.js backend (a BFF / API route) that wants to receive YouTube live chat messages in real time, without polling repeatedly. The YouTube API has a liveChatMessages.streamList endpoint, described here:

But I could not find a usable Node.js client or sample showing how to call streamList at the Node googleapi client

What I would like:

• On the server: a streaming connection to YouTube so I get chat messages as they arrive (low latency)
• Then forward those messages as a stream to a client (e.g. via SSE, WebSocket, or HTTP streaming)

Issues / constraints I encountered:

• The official docs for streamList show examples in gRPC / Python, but no Node/JavaScript snippet.
• When trying to call via the HTTP REST interface, I didn’t find documentation of how the “stream” is exposed at google.youtube({ version: "v3"})
• I tried to “poll-list” quickly (e.g. every 1-5 s), but this hits quota and is inefficient.

Questions:

1. Is liveChatMessages.streamList supported in Node.js / via HTTP+gRPC accessible for JS?
2. If yes, is there an NPM or Google client library that wraps it?
3. If not (or partially), is there a fallback (e.g. long-poll, server push) that’s considered best practice?
4. Any code example (Node, TypeScript) that shows how to open a continuous stream, handle reconnection, etc.?

I can share my current attempt, but I failed to find a working sample. I’d appreciate pointers or minimal working examples.
