space between multiple text spans

I have the following text/html:

(1) <a href="">blaat</a>

One would expect that between (1) and "blaat" would be a space, but this is not showing in the layout. Do we need to account for extra spaces?

When would this need to happen? For instance: "(1)blaat" should not have a space in between.
