Alpine Linux: Exception java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no heif in java.library.path despite libheif is installed in /usr/lib

We had to create a symlink libheif.so, because the Alpine image only has libheif.so.1.

this is not related to this project, but to your OS package manager. On apt you usually want libheif-dev which automatically adds this kind of symlink.

It's more of a difference between how Linux handles libraries, and how the rest (macOS, Windows, Java) handles it.

First off, Java uses the same code to load the library, whatever the platform it runs of. Java finds the right file extension, and will prefix the file with lib on platforms like macOS and Unix.

Linux performs versioning of libraries using suffixes for major versions, but this is not handled in Java.

You can use either symlinks or -dev packages to address this.
