Preserve metric layout across axis & run changes

Currently, the metric layout is reset if one does either of the following:

• Changes the counter for the X-axis (e.g. step to epoch)
• Removes a run from the list to be displayed

It would be great if the layout could be preserved until the user decides to refresh the screen altogether.
