Tasks to resolve before 7.0

This a continuation of the discussion under #597. Since there are now breaking changes in main the next release will be a SemVer major. This discussion is here to find out which issues and PRs need to be resolved before the release of 7.0.

@jasonkuhrt I've compiled a list of all the things that would introduce breaking changes. If you like I can get started on #603 and #532, WDYT?

If 7.0 introduce #509, I'm thinking to have it be behind an opt-in setting, and then in 8.0 we flip the default after some additional consideration.
