Question about upgrading from 5.4.4 to 6.0.6

Good afternoon. I wanted to move the program from centos to ubuntu. Of course I'm testing on a virtual machine. Do I understand correctly that it is better to update the version of the program to the latest version and then deploy the backup on the newly installed program? While updating the program to the latest version, I had problems, I understood because of the composer. Would it be right to completely delete the folders and mentions of the composer from the computer and install it locally for a new one? I checked so, after that everything was updated and worked.
