Am I following the correct branch?

I was running 6.0.14 and ran php upgrade.php without issue thinking I was upgrading to 6.1.0. Everything seems to work fine, but the version showed in the footer is Version v6.1.1-pre - build 10653 (master).

Should I be following a different branch or tag in order to run a release? If so, what is the recommend way of doing that?
