I have a query regarding the usage of Snipe-it, bearing in mind that everyone's use case can be slightly different.
I'm going to be using a new Snipe-IT install and in terms of our assets I was going to do this method:
[software licence/seat] - checked out to - [psychical server/virtual machine/device] (for non-named licences, such as Citrix that use the concurrent licence model)
So this way I can view a software package and see what device it may be installed on.
[server asset] - checked out to - [location]
[vm asset] - checked out to - [vm host server] - checked out to - [location]
[wifi access point] - checked out to [wireless lan controller] - checked out to - [location]
so this way I can view a location, drill down from 'assets' to what controller devices are there, then drill down again from 'assets' to what generic APs may be in use there. We are not using the system for laptops/desktops that are used by people (yet, may come about), so tying it to AD/LDAP for multiple user listing is not there.
However on the Managing Assets page it says that checking out assets to assets or locations is discouraged. Since the devices I will be tracking will be in various locations and generic use, checking them out to a single asset manager serves no purpose so I'm wondering if anyone has done this method and if they found it to be a problem. It may be a case that the whole checkin/checkout process may be abandoned, for devices that may work but for licences, it would be good to see how many are used so when the renewal comes around, we'll be able to see if the software is used somewhere and where.
