The background color tags exist for potential contrast issues with transparent images, not for aesthetical reasons.

If you think different colors could solve a similar problem, please provide an example.

If one has a graphic with both black and white in it neither would provide enough contrast to properly see the image. Also a white background can often be quite jarring to look at, if the color scheme is relatively dark and the image produces a big white rectangle.
