Hmm I just thought about something. The visual first model feels amazing when navigated on a row. The constant selection makes it effortless to make changes, and if you dont want to make changes you can just ignore it.
However half the time im navigating vertically with j and k, in which case i dont get a selection and have to use something like 'wb' to select the word. What if we made them always select the entire word by default.
(think of the amount of times you want to make an action to a single character vs the times you want to make an action to an entire word). This gets even more true since you need to be directly under/over the character you want to edit when you use j/k (if youre not under/over them you have to use h or l either way so the word selection doesnt matter). So the only negative situation would be if you want to edit the character directly above or below where you are, and in that case you have to do hl or esc to remove the selection.
I really think this would be a huge improvement in helix. I would say about 90% of the time you want to do an action to a word youre navigating vertically to get to it (its not on your current line). Of those tiimes maybe 30%-40% youre straight above or below the word, so when you use j or k you land in the middle of the word. You then have to use wb to select it in order to alter it.
