Saving registers' contents accross restarts

I would like to save some contents to registers and use them occasionally as snippets. Is there a config flag I can enable or is there a WIP for this feature? Not trying to urge anyone to work on something like this, but this would be a useful feature for me. Or are there hacks to get some similar behavior?
