As far as I'm aware, for a PR to manipulate windows/views the author has to manually implement the whole layout logic which can conflict (or be discontinuous) with other PRs that manipulate windows/views. Eg, file tree explorer (not a PR anymore) #5768 and one other PR that changes layout.
So, I'm wondering if we could do a backend-frontend thing with windows (like in Emacs perhaps).
