Locally installed herbie is slow because it waits for unpkg.com ?

I installed herbie locally hoping it would be just as fast as the web demo.

But for some reason it waits for "unpkg.com" for about 20 seconds every time at the "Doing soundness" step.
Is the actual computation not happening locally ?

Is this expected behaviour ?

Great question. unpkg.org is a popular CDN for Javascript libraries. soundness is the last step in Herbie's improvement loop, so it sounds like what's happening is that:

1. Herbie runs normally
2. Then it redirects you to the results page
3. That results page loads some JavaScript libraries

The computation happens entirely locally but we do use externally-hosted libraries to, like, draw plots and render math. Our hope was that the browser cache would kick in and you'd only need to download the libraries once, but if it's a problem we can probably just vendor the libraries we use and then you won't need to download them from anywhere.

It works well again atm. Seems like unpkg.com gets swamped sometimes which then affects Herbie negatively.

I used FireFox for this, i'll try Vivaldi next time this happens, maybe it has better cache behaviour ?

Though i noticed on Vivaldi the "Go to previous page" Button causes Herbie to go into it's FPCore Input Mask mode, even though i never used it. I would expect it to go back to the normal formula input. But that's a minor issue and unrelated to this.
