Calendar Look

I liked the old "dot-style" in the Calendar, indicating a new show / movie / music album release etc. in yellow, blue, green dots. The new style is using lines, that hide the calendar dates. The current day is also hard to read, because the contrast is too low.

Is it possible to solve this with CSS?

If so, where do I start too look at?
