Designing lovelace screens on large monitors, then displaying on tablets and phones

I believe this is a minor challenge that everyone has, You create the UI's for all of your devices and screens using a monitor, but the display order is based on the number of columns. A little trial and error is usually required (at least by me) to get things right on my smartphone and various tablets of different sizes. Perhaps if each card was assigned a number (its display order) it would be easier? This number would only appear while in "Edit Dashboard" mode. This seems like an easy to implement solution.

Perhaps there is already a solution out there or in the works? I have seen a youtube showing a HAC that allowed drag and drop of cards. But this caused the yaml to grow exponentially. Wouldn't simply numbering the cards while in edit mode with their display order work with virtually no overhead?
