Icon Background issue with the new version (0.63)

Dear All,
I've noticed a strange behaviour with the early version 0.63. It seems that it's not possible to set a background only for the icon.
Is it due to my configuration, or could this be a small bug?

I think it was this change as part of #333

going to rethink some bits of logic here to try and make it more resilient
