- update 'Installing the library' section in README file
- add .gitignore files
- fix configure.ac
- allow make tests without installing the library
- add 'build_tests' target to avoid installing tests
- remove executable bit from AUTHORS file
- remove redundant empty lines in include/Makefile and src/Makefile
