Using "<->" in text is a convenient shorthand, but it leads to some unfortunate effects when the line break occurs at the hyphen (as they are wont to do). Consider a different convention. ↔ is now available if you feel that the shorthand is needed. Or you could try using words.

Amusingly, the bidirectional arrow character that you used (which I cannot type) arrived to me as "<->" :-)
Maybe using "<=>" would work ? I'm often using that for thick bidirectional arrows, and I suspect that it shouldn't break around an equal sign.
