Smolagents for RAG?

In a production RAG system we typically want to return all retrieved documents obtained as part of the retrieval step, to e.g. show the user in the UI. What's the best way to do this with e.g. a CodeAgent?

One "hack" might be to go over previous steps and parse the tool output from the AgentStep.observation or AgentStep.action_output, but this seems silly. Did I miss something here?
