I'm trying to back up my entire $HOME directory, but I want to exclude all hidden files and folders (those that start with a dot, like .config, .cache, etc.). However, I can't seem to get it to work correctly—these files keep getting included in the backup.
I've already tried using patterns like .* to exclude them, but it doesn't seem to work.
Does anyone know the best way to perform a full backup of $HOME while ignoring hidden files and directories? I'd appreciate any advice or examples.
