build.py imports setuptools.dep_util which does not exist in later setuptools

build.py of PyPI release 0.1.1 of imageio-freeimage imports setuptools.dep_util, but this has been removed in later setuptools. The project therefor does not build.

build.py is not in the repository though, see #5

Setuptools used to work a bit differently 4 years ago, when I last touched this project :D

Today, the freeimage plugin is (still) part of ImageIO itself, so if you follow the instructions in the plugin's docs (link) you will get steps on how to set it up correctly.

The reason for this repo is that FreeImage hasn't seen a new version in a long time, has a couple bugs, and a strange, custom license that makes it unclear if it is BSD-2 compatible. FreeImage itself is not shipped by us (you install it manually), but I couldn't get a clear answer on what implications the FreeImage license has on our plugin. As a result, I started moving it out but never got that project finished.

To give a bit more detail on this repo: Since this is a separate repo licensed under the freeimage license, the vision for it was to fork FreeImage, built it for major OS'es, and eventually bundle it in the wheel. This is where things slowed down, because changing the build system of FreeImage to something that can build wheels and is compatible with Apple's ARM chips proved more involved (dependency hell + build systems weren't where they are today).

Some background here too: I was going through the 'broken Guix packages' to fix some. Guix packages imageio-freeimage because the reasons you give align with the Guix project.

I came here to see whether there is a later version, but then I got kinda confused, because there are three versions of [the code of] this plugin:

• The tip of the git repository, which is 0.1.0 on PyPI I think (as there are no tags),
• The latest version on PyPI, which seems to be based on FEAT: ship with built-in FreeImage #3,
• The *freeimage*.py files in imageio itself.

Since imageio itself is not yet using the code in this repository, I suggested that we remove the python-imageio-freeimage package from Guix for now. We can add it back later.

As to how to fix the build; I would have given you a P.R. (instead of just an issue) if I had figured it out, but I couldn't even find the commit to branch from.

Yes, removing it from Guix for now makes sense.

You will get a big deprecation notice in ImageIO (and at least 6 months+ migration time) once the plugin moves out of ImageIO itself. At that time I think it shouldn't be a lot of work to re-add this package there :)
