Docker errors during install - Windows 11 and WSL2

I'm trying to install on WSL2 in Windows 11. I get this error when doing the Express install or the Recommended install. I'm trying to do this in WSL2 on a Windows 11 machine. Maybe that is the problem? I did find some mentions of WSL2 here indicating it might work. #42

Hi Ryan, have you tried enabling Docker for WSL2 in the Docker for Windows's setting page?

Thanks for pointing me in this direction. I didn't realize I need to install Docker Desktop for windows when using docker in WSL. I had only installed docker and docker-compose in WSL/Ubuntu. Once I installed Docker Desktop, I could get everything to startup correctly.

But when browsing to localhost:2283 I get a 502 Bad Gateway error from nginx. I ran docker logs on (what I assume is) the main container and didn't see anything obviously wrong. Any tips on where I should be looking for the problem?

Can you help me get the log for the immich-server container? If possible, can you browse to yourip:2283 instead of localhost?

I get the same error using all the IPs on my machine (127.0.0.1, 192.168.3.X).

That is the log from the microservice container. Can you help me get the log from the server container instead? Usually, if the web cannot access the server, there might be some problem with the initialization of the core server

I think we might need the logs from the proxy container? But when I run docker logs on that container, I get
Error response from daemon: configured logging driver does not support reading

When I ssh into that container and go into the nginx logs directory, it looks like logging is setup to go to STDOUT & STDERR. Which seems right to me.

Ok I edited the docker-compose file and commented out the

logging:
driver: none

section.

Now I am able to get some output from the immich_proxy container when running docker logs:

Hmm, the proxy is usually the one without any problem. I think it tried to communicate with the server at 3000 but failed. Can you help me get the immich-server container's log?

Hmm everything looks OK. can you try bring down the whole stack with docker-compose down or docker compose down then docker compose up and try again?

No change. You are probably right it's probably not related to the proxy. Are there any other logs I can manually check in that docker container?

The logs are printed out on the console, so if you start everything with docker compose up, log should be live on console then.

I haven't tried running the release version on WSL2 and Docker for Windows, only in development. And through development I can access the instance through localhost.

What happen if you run this in the browser http://localhost:2283/api/server-info or http://your-ip:2283/api/server-info

Hmm so it cannot communicate with the server at all. Do you have port 2283 block on uwf? Can you perform the curl command to the above address from the wsl terminal?

To fix this issue add 'vm.overcommit_memory = 1' to /etc/sysctl.conf and then reboot or run the command 'sysctl vm.overcommit_memory=1' for this to take effect.
