I have searched the existing feature requests, both open and closed, to make sure this is not a duplicate request.
The feature
Summary
Currently, Immich allows comments on individual photos or entire albums but doesn’t support adding comments or labels to a subset of photos within an album. This feature would allow users to group specific photos (within an album) and assign them a shared comment, label, or description for better organization and context.
Problem
When managing albums with large numbers of photos from different events, it can be difficult to group similar photos and add context without creating separate albums. For example:
A vacation album with photos from multiple locations (zoo, beach, family dinner) could benefit from grouping certain photos and adding specific labels or comments for better context and easier navigation.
Currently, the only option is to add a comment to each individual photo or comment at the album level, but there is no option to group specific photos together for a shared comment or label within an album.
Proposed Solution
Introduce the ability to add a shared comment, label, or description to a group of photos within the same album. This could be achieved through one of the following methods:
Subsections in Albums(My favorite 😃 ): Implement a feature that allows users to create "sections" within an album (for example, grouping all zoo photos together with a title/description).
Bulk Commenting/Labeling: Allow users to select multiple photos and add a shared comment or label to those photos.
Tagging Groups of Photos: Allow users to apply tags to multiple photos within an album, with the option to add descriptions to those tags.
Use Case Example
Album: "Summer Vacation 2025" (contains 300+ photos)
Zoo Visit Photos: Select all photos from the zoo and add the label “Zoo Visit – Day 2” or a shared comment.
Beach Photos: Select all beach photos and add the label “Beach Day.”
Family Dinner: Select all photos from the dinner and add a description, like “Family Dinner on the last night.”
This would allow users to easily navigate through large albums while keeping the photos in chronological or thematic order.
Specifically my real world example is - I am going over all my family albums, scanning them and pour everything into a "family archive" album. Currently I lose a lot of context - for examlpe I want to know that these 10 photos are from when we went to the beach on July 98, although I don't want to either open a new album for every such event, or comment separately on every photo as both mitigations have major downsides.
Why This is Important
Improved Organization: This would allow users to group and annotate photos based on content or location, making it easier to revisit or share specific parts of an album.
Better User Experience: For albums with mixed content (vacations, events), this feature helps reduce the need for creating multiple albums, streamlining the experience.
Enhanced Storytelling: Adding labels or comments to grouped photos can provide better context, making it easier to remember and share the story behind the photos.
Ending comments
I’ve checked for any existing feature requests related to this and didn’t find anything similar. In case I missed something, I am sorry!
I am using immich for few months now and it is an absolute blast! Kudos for this amazing project. You 🪨 !!
