Since a few beta versions and now in the final stages, the virtual machines running macOS 26.1 no longer have serial numbers. This could be a bug, a feature (which is really bad), or an evolution that allows us to set it with a tool (which is really good). There’s nothing mentioned in the release notes, and I’ve sent a Feedback message to Apple without any response. If this bothers you as it bothers me, you can also open a Feedback about it. |

Actually... Apple does mention it but over in the release notes for Developers
I'm curious if there are effects outside iCloud services, any knock on effects? I suppose it depends on whether a piece of software needs a serial number for something? Update: Oh, I see here that without a serial number you cannot enable FileVault. And this report that it will disable FileVault on existing VMs when the serial is missing. |
