Hello. I am wondering if there is way displaying the group label as a column to the left instead of a row at the beginning of the section.

If I understood correctly what you need there might be a workaround with .indent_mods and append_topleft. This is, of course, not really supported, and I do not know if it is enough for your needs. An example with base rtables:

No it is not possible to change the default value as it would affect many other things that do not need it
