[Support]: Is there any plan to move away from opentracing-go, which is archived?

Problem Description

Currently instana depends on github.com/opentracing/opentracing-go which is in public archive. I would like to remove the dependency on this library from my application, but it comes as a transitive dependency from the instana/go-sensor. Is there any plan to switch, for example, to open-telemetry?

Thank you for reaching out and for reporting your question.

At the moment, we don’t have plans to add native OpenTelemetry support to the go-sensor repo. However, you can instrument your application using the community OpenTelemetry Go SDK. The Instana backend is capable of accepting and processing data in the OpenTelemetry (OTel) format, so this approach should work well for your use case.

@sanojsubran that unfortunately doesn't remove the dependency to an archived repository which leads to challenges with security and compliance.

Hi @ynori7,
A few of the public APIs are currently tightly coupled with the opentracing-go components. As a result, adding OpenTelemetry support would require several breaking changes.

Although OpenTelemetry support is being considered, there are currently no plans to incorporate it into the existing go-sensor repository at this time.
