The Road to 0.3.x

The 0.2 cycle was primarily focused on adding more agents. There are still more to add, and the philosophy of Ruler is to supporte as many agents as possible, but for the 0.3 the priority is to add new features that I've been waiting to include for a long time.

Before v0.3.0

To finish off 0.2 and get ready for 0.3, there are quite a few cleanups and refactors that I want to apply. One of the disadvantages of a codebase developed incrementally and purely with AI agents (or communicty contribs) is that even though it is relatively young, the code already stinks badly.

Contributors Note: if you have an in-flight branch or are planning a significant change now, there's good chances that it will be difficult to merge later, so please let's coordinate.

I will do my best to complete this phase in the next few days and by latest end of August 2025.

0.3.0 will be a stable and backwards-compatible version you can pin and rely on even while the tool changes and gains new features.

0.3.x

Still need to work out what the priorities are, but off the top of my head these are things I and many users seem to be interested in:

• Support for selective application of rules in agents that support that (for example: Cursor, Copilot)
• Support for agents / modes and commands / prompts in agents that support them
• Updating global configs of agents so that users can use Ruler to manage their global config without having to replicate it in each project
• Templating of rules and config with support for environment variables (so that they don't need to be included in VCS-committed .ruler
• Moving MCP config from its own mcp.json into ruler.toml (since there's anyway no consistent format that can be copied over directly to many agents)
• ...

Would love to hear your ideas and preferences as I refine this roadmap.
