Global search plugins?

I am looking for a solution/planning to develop something for the following use case:

I would like to add some pre-processing to the search field behavior:
We do have product labels where the partnumber and the serial number is present along with additional data like revision, etc.
Ideally entering these strings (scanning the barcode) should lead to two results: an item and a stock item.

Similarly on bags from TME the QR code contains the PN of a supplier item, the Purchase order. These strings could be extracted with a regexp and the proper results could be shown.

I did not found any traces of plugins influencing the global search behavior.
Are there any plans for something similar?
