Problem statement

Currently if user wants know overall situation what parts need restock it require quite much clicking and looking from different places

Suggested solution

It would be nice to have Deficit as optional column in web/part/category/index/parts

Describe alternatives you've considered

Own view for list of deficit items.

Currently the "deficit" cannot be annotated to an entire queryset and is expensive to calculate - so it can only be displayed on a per-part individual basis.

We maybe have to implement some structural changes for this to be possible

I see. How about adding an admin-configurable option to allow or deny expensive fields (one by one)? I can definitely see how, in systems with hundreds of users and datasets with tens or hundreds of thousands of rows, that could become an issue. But in small environments it can be acceptable to run multiple queries per fetched line in SQL.

In our case, the normal baseline on SQL Server averages around 5k queries per second, and it quite often bursts to 100k queries per second, so it’s like a penny dropped in a metal forge if each page load generates 100 or even 500 extra SQL queries. :)

I know it’s a brute-force approach, but on the other hand it would provide a way to test features without ruining usability for enterprise users. And then, if there’s a lot of use for that kind of functionality, it can be optimized.

I don’t think we should further increase maintainer burden by introducing even more branches into our querysets that can fail/kill performance.

I do not think that the suggested approach would be acceptable.

We have discussed caching part requirements in #11211 - this would calculate and store part deficit information allowing it to be accessed quickly
