Preventing app from suspending/terminating in the background

I'm working on an app with an audio player. On android, when I play music on it and minimize it, the music continues for a minute or two, then begins stuttering and eventually cuts out. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Ideally I want just the notification with music controls for the app to be visible, with the player working in the background.
