whirlwind backend missing after editable install – show_versions() reports None

Hi everyone,
I built Dolphin from source (v 0.42.2) in a fresh conda environment:

  git clone https://github.com/isce-framework/dolphin.git
  cd dolphin
  conda env create -f conda-env.yml
  conda activate dolph-gpu
  pip install -e .

The Python-only part installs fine, but dolphin.show_versions() still lists

whirlwind : None

and any code path that executes

  import whirlwind as ww

raises

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'whirlwind'

What I checked so far：

1. No whirlwind/ directory or whirlwind*.so anywhere under the repo.
2. No C/C++/Fortran source files whose name contains whirlwind.
3. pyproject.toml does not declare any extension called whirlwind.
4. The only reference is inside src/dolphin/unwrap/_whirlwind.py which simply tries to import whirlwind as ww.

Question

1. Is whirlwind supposed to be an optional external dependency, or should it be compiled during the editable install?
2. If it is missing sources, could you point me to the correct branch/sub-module or provide a short-term workaround?

Hi, had you seen this repo in the same github org? https://github.com/isce-framework/whirlwind
This is something that @gmgunter started during our large scale unwrapping studies. We haven't gotten back to fixing the bugs related to a certain implementation detail of whirlwind, so I'm not sure it's working without a specific older scipy version.

Sorry for not making it clearer in the docs, some of the unwrappers were in flux for a long time, so we didn't add detailed install instructions to all of them
