Thanks for writing this, Ian. I am in a similar situation where I need to test an app. What you described here is much cleaner and clear than what I cobbled together.

This is great, but I had one additional requirement - can I get hold of the context itself from the test? It's not immediately straightforward.

I did it with this fixture. Anywhere I use the fixture the context has the returned object attached.

Sure.

My context provides simple API clients. I don't want to make API calls in my unit tests, so I want to replace the context. But I do want to check that the API calls are being made, and in order to do that I need the mock API clients to inspect them. This is a neat way to keep everything in one place.

Interesting. Earlier this year I built an API using FastAPI and wanted to do something similar. I'm not sure if you are working under the same circumstances, i.e. hosting the API yourself, but if you are have you played with TestClient?
